The Big Bear Alpine Zoo, located in Big Bear Lake, California, is a unique wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation center dedicated to the care, recovery, and conservation of native alpine animals. Established in 1959 following wildfires that left many animals injured, the facility began as a rescue center and has grown into one of only two alpine zoos in the United States.
Unlike traditional zoos, its primary mission is to rehabilitate injured, orphaned, and imprinted wildlife, with the goal of returning them to their natural habitats whenever possible. Animals that cannot survive in the wild are given permanent homes, where they also serve as ambassadors to educate visitors about wildlife conservation and coexistence.
The zoo features species native to the San Bernardino Mountains, including black bears, mountain lions, wolves, and birds of prey, housed in environments designed to reflect their natural alpine habitats.
Through its focus on rescue, education, and conservation, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo provides visitors with an intimate and meaningful wildlife experience while supporting the protection of regional ecosystems.
